Writing for the sheer pleasure of writing
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to become a professional writer. I wrote my first story in the 4th grade and became hopelessly addicted. The assignment was to create something based on our names. At that time, my last name was Wickwire, so I created a brand new burglar alarm.
Here’s the gist of the idea. I decided that if you took 100 feet of candle wick and 100 feet of barbed wire, you could wrap it around your house. When the burglar tried to enter the house, he’d get caught in the wire, which would in turn, cause a spark that would ignite the candle wick. He’d get fried, and your stuff would be safe. Of course now, I see that that would probably cause the house to go up in flames, and all your stuff would be gone anyway. However, I was 10 and those things don’t run through the mind of a child.
Anyway, I received an A on the assignment, and a deep love of writing. These days, I write all the time. My husband gets tired of me buying notebooks and new pens. I’ve also got a serious pen fetish. I can sit down with a box of pens, and write with each one of them until I find the one I think feels the best. Don’t ask, I don’t know why. I honestly have stacks and stacks of notebooks filled with silly things I’ve written over the years. I may need a 12 step program for this problem.
My point is that I write for the sheer pleasure of writing. It really doesn’t matter what I’m writing about, as long as I’m writing. This past January, I strayed away from the writing community, in order to find a way to earn some money online. I was bound and determined that I was going to figure out a way, and lo and behold, I found myself in the blogosphere. And what do we do in the blogosphere??? Write? Right!
Writing is a wonderful way to get things off your chest and out of your head. When I’m upset, I can sit down and call the world all kinds of colorful names, and when I’m done, I can move on with my life. It’s totally amazing.
As you sit there each day and write your blogs, think about the act of writing itself. Remember, these aren’t just words you send out to the world, they’re a part of who you are. Embrace them, they are your ticket to the world.
